The Scottish University for Industry The Client The Scottish University for Industry (SUfI) is a major new Scottish Executive initiative that aims to encourage lifelong learning and enhance the skills base of Scotland's workforce. SUfI is basically an organization for open and distance learning that uses new technology to try to minimize the barriers to learning, such as time, cost, lack of information, lack of confidence and inconvenience, by offering opportunities when, where and how it best suits the learner. SUfI services are promoted under the brand name of learndirect Scotland. The Project The design agency, StudioCinna, is the author of the first high-end online presence and design solutions for The Scottish University for Industry (SUfI) Web site, which accommodates a content management system (CMS), allows for future expansion and complements the 'look and feel' of the newly produced print collateral. The online solution, designed by StudioCinna, successfully achieves the project's aim by reflecting the Scottish UfI (SUfI) as a leader in the Lifelong Learning Sector, encouraging lifelong learning and skill enhancement within the Scottish workforce within a welcoming, forthright and positive environment that supports usability guidelines. Entering the project during the strategic phase, StudioCinna created a series of iterative design trials, exploring concepts, solutions and design directions, which established the big picture, set the design language which enables all the visual elements to work together harmoniously and successfully communicated creative ideas back to the client. Drawing from nearly two decades of professional experience gained from working on global Fortune 500 accounts for the major advertising agencies in the USA and Europe and adapting these same valuable skills toward pitching and developing Web sites since the inception of the Web, StudioCinna was able to offer advice and deliver innovative solutions to an Internet agency, which assumed the role of intermediary during the design phase of the project. StudioCinna's online solution entailed the creation of the SUfi brand logo for Internet usage, the design and development of the page templates for the Web site, and the design of the scaleable navigational system. The considered layout and design of the CMS templates accommodate for the frequent updates of information and comprises of the home page with a linked inclusion of the Scottish Ministerial Statement, a corporate information section containing the Scottish UfI (SUfi), establishment, function and developmental information, team information and office locations, a searchable news and archive section (entry, list, and article pages), an events section, a team development section, an interest areas section with information about Learning Centres, ICT system and published guides, a general discussion forum which allows users to enter questions and comments, a central document download section (chronologically listing downloadable .pdf documentation), a relevant links and further information section, the terms and conditions screens and the design and format of the forms, registration, password and confirmation screens within the database systems. The Results StudioCinna delivered on time and within budget the series of page templates for the entire Web site adhering to the accessibility and usability W3C standards which established the boilerplate formula for the site to be published through a content management system database and easily accommodate future expansion. The Web site design solution (inclusive of the design of an online SUfI brand mark), authored and creative directed by StudioCinna, demonstrates a consistent design language throughout, establishes The Scottish University for Industry's first high-end online brand presence and successfully achieves the client's aims by delivering an impressive design solution which effectively positions the Scottish UfI (SUfI) as a leader in the Lifelong Learning Sector and encourages lifelong learning and skill enhancement within the Scottish workforce. |
