BBC Education The Client The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) exists to enrich people's lives with great programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain. Its vision is to be the most creative, trusted organisation in the world. It provides a wide range of distinctive programmes and services for everyone, free of commercial interests and political bias. They include television, radio, national, local, childrens', educational, language and other services for key interest groups. BBC services are hugely popular and used by over 90% of the UK population every week. The BBC is financed by a TV license paid by households. It does not have to serve the interests of advertisers, or produce a return for shareholders. This means it can concentrate on providing high quality programmes and services for everyone, many of which would not otherwise be supported by subscription or advertising. The Project StudioCinna was invited by an Internet agency to create a Flash interactive game prototype for inclusion within a BBC Educational government tender pitch. The prototype is one of the multiple movies components used to comprise an educational lesson a segment of the entire pitch, which targeted school children and utilized various divisions of the BBC. As the author of the interactive game prototype, StudioCinna's creative director designed a user interface (UI) that is clear, unambiguous and intuitive to use. In line with Flash usability standards, applying design aesthetics to established conventions and defining content areas on the screen the elements within the UI are brought together to create a seamless whole complimenting the other components within the educational lesson. Keeping simplicity in the UI design, StudioCinna carefully considered whether each animation within the prototype added value ensuring that the young user would not be distracted from accomplishing their task as human eye is attracted to movement. The outcome allows the student to initiate actions until the clock runs out while the background animation enhances the presentation by adding a subtle sense impression of passing time. The state visualization gives clear and visible responses communicating that actions have been received adding reassurance that the student is in control of the Flash content. Interstitial animations (transitions) were omitted, as they can often have the effect of making an interaction appear slow, instead the solution contains an instant click-respond user interaction between screens. Drawing from nearly two decades of professional experience gained from working on global children's accounts for the major publishing and advertising agencies and within the New Media sector enabled StudioCinna's creative director to deliver an innovative interactive prototype. The prototype maximizes the functionality of Flash, provides interest and easy interaction for school children. StudioCinna successfully delivered the interactive game prototype within schedule and budget, maintaining the strict design guidelines and constraints for inclusion within the educational lesson segment of the BBC Educational government tender pitch. |
