Barclays, Barclaycard, Woolwich

The Client

Barclays is a UK-based financial services group engaged primarily in banking, investment banking and investment management. In terms of market capitalization Barclays is one of the top ten largest banks in the world. A leading UK retail and business bank, it also provides coordinated global services to multinational corporations and financial institutions worldwide. Barclays has been involved in banking for over 300 years and operates in over 60 countries with over 76,200 employees.

The Project

The design agency, StudioCinna, is the author of the design solutions for the Barclays, Barclaycard and Woolwich Internet Press Centres (newsrooms). StudioCinna successfully achieved the project's aim by designing a solution which accommodates a content management system (CMS), allows for future expansion and complements the 'look and feel' of Barclays brand and the existing Web site.

Drawing from nearly two decades of professional experience gained from working on global Fortune 500 accounts for the major advertising agencies in the USA and Europe and adapting these same valuable skills toward pitching and developing Web sites since the inception of the Web, StudioCinna was able to offer advice and deliver innovative solutions — to the technology company, which assumed the role of intermediary during the design phase of the project.

Entering the project during the strategic phase, StudioCinna created a series of iterative design trials, exploring solutions and design directions, which established the big picture, set the design language — which enables all the visual elements to work together harmoniously — and successfully communicated creative solutions back to the client.

StudioCinna's online solution included the design and development of the page templates for the Internet Press Centres, the design of navigational system, search fields and the full access press pass device.

The CMS template designs for the Internet Press Centre entail the considered design and layout of pages to easily accommodate for the frequent updates of information and are comprised of the press centre home page and the news releases section (search, list and article pages), media library section (search, list, results list and detail view pages), news calendar section (listing of upcoming events), financial information section (list and financial information pages), surveys and reports section (list and report pages), about Barclays (subsidiary companies, facts and figures, business history and strategy pages), executive biographies section (listing of board members and directors and biographies pages), corporate responsibility section (list and report pages), sponsorship section (list and report pages), press office help (FAQ page), the terms and conditions screens, and the design and format of the search fields, the full access press pass device (with log in, forgotten password, my profile, about the press pass, register functionality), forms, registration, password and confirmation screens within the database systems.

The Results

StudioCinna delivered on time and within budget a series of page templates for the Internet Press Centre — adhering to the accessibility and usability W3C standards — which established the boilerplate formula for the Barclays, Barclaycard and Woolwich Internet Press Centres to be published, by the technology company, through a content management system database and easily accommodate future expansion.

The Internet Press Centre design solution, authored and creative directed by StudioCinna, demonstrates a consistent design language throughout, establishes the Barclays, Barclaycard and Woolwich first high-end online brand press centres (newsrooms) and successfully achieves the client's aims and the project brief by delivering an impressive design solution for the Internet based product, which effectively demonstrates the wealth of information available to the PR industry.

External Alterations

The Barclays, Barclaycard and Woolwich Internet Press Centres are maintained externally by the technology company, which independently implemented design alterations to the press centres — which include: removing the secondary links at the bottom of each page and replacing the action buttons. The implemented design alterations are contrary to the Barclay brand guidelines and dissimilar to the design language.

Testimonials

"Our new online newsroom is a quantum leap forward... it makes life infinitely easier and more productive for Barclays PR team-members and agencies."

— Community & PR Director, Barclays PLC
